Hello to all new parents / carers, this website is designed to help you and your child find out all about us and our aims.

In our Little Learners Lane Room the children are aged between 3 months and 24 months, depending on their stage of development e.g. walking with confidence. When the children pass 2 years they can move up to our Big Learners Bridge Room.

Family Photographs

As part of your child's settling in process we like to introduce individual 'home photo books'. These books enable your child to share and communicate (verbally & non-verbally) about their familiar family members, their home and personal experiences.

Communication and language development is one of prime areas of learning and this activity engages the children through playing with what they know in an open-ended activity.

Please could you bring in photographs of your child’s favourite toy(s), book(s), pets, siblings, familiar relatives, play area or food. Anything that your child takes pleasure from or is important to them. Please could you write on the back of the photo a short explanation of what/who the photograph is of so that the information can be transferred into a personal album.

Keyperson scheme

In little learners lane we operate a keyworker system. The system ensures that every child has a named keyworker who will be responsible for the planning and observation of your child’s learning.

Before your baby joins us we offer a settling in period, this usually lasts for 1 - 2 weeks. During these trial sessions you and your baby can come in and meet our staff and the other babies, becoming familiar with the surrounding. If you need more time settling in we are happy to oblige.

The trial sessions are the ideal time to discuss your baby’s routine, likes and dislikes and to enable us to discuss the care routine for your child, e.g. how they sleep, if they have a comforter etc.

Also at this time we would ask you to return any personal registration forms to our nursery manager. This is to ensure we have all the correct information before you leave your baby with us for the first time.

Your child's first day at our Tunbridge Wells Nursery

On your first day in little learners lane, you'll need to bring with you:

  • A pack of nappies
  • Baby wipes (if used)
  • Creams for nappy time
  • Spare clothes
  • Milk and bottles, (labeled with your child’s name please)
  • Teething gel
  • A sun hat and sun cream for the warmer months
  • Care plan

Milk and food

We do ask that you prepare your baby’s bottles and the powdered milk in the original container so that we can make up the formula as and when required. At the end of the day the bottles go back in your baby’s bag ready for the next day.

We provide cow’s milk for those babies who have reached this stage. All feeder cups and bibs for your baby are provided and all the necessary equipment is sterilised if required.

Weaning

As your baby starts weaning we will work alongside you to help maintain your baby’s routine. All foods are prepared by our housekeeper/cook, but if you do wish to bring your own food during the initial weaning stage that is fine too.

We will blend all the food depending on the children’s stage of weaning. We're happy to talk to parents / carers about individual diets/and allergies.

Meal times

  • Breakfast: 08:00-09:00
  • Snack: 10:30
  • Lunch: 11:45-12:00
  • Snack: 14:30
  • Tea: 16:00
  • Water is offered throughout the day

Breakfast is usually given on arrival to nursery. Your baby’s routine tends to change a lot through their first year so the meal times above are just a guideline.

We can adapt our menus to suit your baby’s dietary requirements e.g. vegetarian etc. We also adapt our menu to suit the baby’s different stages e.g. pureed, blended, chipped etc and introduce new tastes and textures gradually.

We have bouncy chairs for small babies to feed in, and high chairs for the babies that are starting to sit up.

Daily communication books

All food, drink, nappy changes are written down in your child’s daily communication book, this is filed in throughout your baby’s day so that you can take it home. A member of our staff will go through the book to make sure you have all the information about your child’s day when you collect them.

We are registered with Ofsted to have children on the premises from 07:30 through to 18:00. As the nursery closes at 18:00, parents requiring sessional handover information should aim to arrive at the latest by 18:00 please.

Sleep times

Each baby has a clean cot sheet, daily. The sheets are washed every 24 hours to stop the spread of infection. Sleep areas are monitored up to a maximum of every 10 minutes. The checks are recorded on a sleep chart. Your child’s sleep times and length of sleep will be written in your daily communication book.

Medication

Under Ofsted regulations we are only allowed to administer medicine that has been prescribed by a doctor. If your child needs prescribed medicine you'll be asked to fill in a medicine form giving instruction on dosage, time upon arrival at the nursery each day. You will be asked to sign a form at the end of the day so that you have the correct information about your child’s medication.

  • We can administer Calpol in an emergency, but only with prior written consent from parents
  • We only give Calpol if your child has a high temperature and we have contacted you by telephone to request your verbal permission
  • We can only give one dose of Calpol per day
  • If your child continues to run a high temperature we will endeavour to reduce it by cooling the child with damp cloths and removal of clothes
  • If this does not work we will request that you collect your child from nursery and seek medical assistance
  • In extreme medical circumstances or if we cannot make contact with you or the recorded emergency contact person we will call for an ambulance, (although thankfully this is extremely rare).

Accidents

During your child’s time our Nuffy Bear Nursery should your child have an accident it will be dealt with by our trained first aiders. All details of the accident will be recorded on a paper form and electronically. You'll be asked to sign the completed form when you collect your child.

Learning journals

Each baby has their own learning journal in which their key person will record how your child is developing and progressing. This is done through observations and evaluating their play. By observing your child we can gain information to inform future planning and ensure that all your child’s individual needs are being met. Each observation and assessment made on your child is recorded in their learning journey profile.

You are welcome to access your child’s profile at any time, and we share the file with you twice a year at key person meetings.

Emergency Closure

Tunbridge Wells Nuffy Bear Day Nursery is open 51 weeks of the year with the exception of Bank Holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year. In the event of a breakdown of essential services (e.g. electrical failure or loss of water supply etc), severe weather conditions or where the nursery has to close totally or partially due to an illness epidemic, it is important that you are familiar with the following procedures;

  • Parents will be contacted either by phone, email or text message, asking them to collect their child/children
  • Where the nursery has closed due to severe weather, loss of essential services or illness epidemic, please call to confirm that we will reopen before you drop off your child the following day
  • In the event of heavy snow where transport services are affected, the nursery will open providing staff are able to get to work. If not all staff are able to make it to the nursery we may have to offer a limited number of spaces on a first come first served basis. We may ask parents to wait with their children until staff have arrived at the nursery, or return at a later time once we have confirmed all staff have arrived safely
  • We may also need to ask parents to make arrangements to collect their children early in such an eventuality.

We genuinely hope the information above has been useful, but should there by anything else you need to know please feel free to contact us and we'll be happy to help.
