Welcome to our Explorers Room, St Albans

In our Explorers Room the children are aged between 2 and 3 years old, depending on the child's stage of development. As your child's confidence develops they may move up to our Inventors (Preschool) Room before their 3rd birthday. We encourage the kids to learn through play and through the interaction with their peers.

We work very closely with the Preschool team so that your child is familiar with all their staff and children, making the transition into pre-school much easier for all concerned.

Keyperson scheme

As with all our nursery rooms here in St Albans we operate a keyperson scheme. The scheme ensures that every child has a named person who'll be responsible for the planning and observation of your child’s learning whilst in the Toddler Room.

Before your child joins us we offer a settling period. During this important trial period you and your child come and meet our staff and the other children. This allows you both to become familiar with our nursery environment. Each child settles in differently so we will work with each individual family to meet your needs.

This is the perfect opportunity to chat to us about your child’s routine, likes and dislikes and to enable us to discuss the care routine for your child, e.g. how they sleep, if they have a comforter, dietary needs etc.

Also at this time we would ask you to return any personal registration forms to our manager, Karen. This is to ensure we have all the necessary information / contact details, before you leave your child with us for the first time.

First day at our St Albans Nursery

On your first day you will need to bring with you:

  • A pack of nappies and disposable bags
  • Baby wipes (if used)
  • Creams for nappy time
  • Spare clothes
  • A sun hat and sun cream for the warmer months
  • Care plan
Daily communication sheets

All food, drink and nappy changes are written down in a daily communication sheets, this is filed in daily so that you can take it home with you and read all about your child's day in the Toddlers room. A member of our dedicated staff will go through the book to make sure you have all the information you need when you collect them.

Under Ofsted regulations we are only allowed to administer medicine that has been prescribed by a doctor. If your child needs prescribed medicine you'll be asked to fill in a medicine form giving instruction on dosage, time upon arrival at the nursery each day. You will be asked to sign a form at the end of the day so that you have the correct information about your child’s medication.
We can administer Calpol in an emergency, but only with prior written consent from parents. We only give Calpol if your child has a high temperature and we have contacted you by telephone to request your verbal permission. Should we not be able to contact you by phone and your child needs Calpol we will administer it on the grounds that it is a pre-signed consent form. If your child continues to run a high temperature we will endeavour to reduce it by cooling the child with damp cloths and removal of clothes. If this does not work we will request that you collect your child from nursery and seek medical assistance. In extreme medical circumstances or if we cannot make contact with you or the recorded emergency contact person we will call for an ambulance, (although thankfully this is extremely rare).

During your child’s time at nursery, should your child have an accident it will be dealt with by our trained first aiders. All details of the accident will be recorded on a paper form and electronically. You will be asked to sign the completed form when you collect your child. Please note accidents are rare, but it is important we have this procedure in place.

Learning journals

Each child has their own learning journal in which their keyperson records their development. This is done through observations and assessment of their play and interaction with others. By observing your child we can gain information to inform future planning and ensure that all your child’s unique, individual needs are being met.

Each observation and assessment made on your child is recorded in their learning journey profile. You're welcome to access your child’s profile at any time and we share the file with you twice a year at our parent consultation meetings.
