Richard Powell is a Professor of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and is a national authority in the management of allergic diseases. He is a member of several national committees advising on standards of allergy care and related drug treatments across the UK.
A detailed and thorough history is central to making a correct allergy diagnosis. A consultation with Professor Powell will therefore establish symptoms, relationship to an allergen exposure, progression of reaction and response to any treatment. Most patients will then undergo skin prick testing to assist in the identification of the triggering substance.
Following a clinical diagnosis supported by appropriate allergy tests an individualised treatment plan will be developed and this is particularly relevant to food allergy sufferers.
Oral desensitisation to grass pollen is a new treatment available for hay fever sufferers who do not respond adequately to standard medication.
He welcomes referrals of patients with:
- Food reactions including food allergy/intolerances
- Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions)
- Urticaria (hives and nettle rash)
- Angioedema (swellings)
- Rhinitis (runny nose, sneezing etc)
- Allergic conjunctivitis (itchy eyes)
- Insect sting allergy
- Drug reactions/allergy
