Mr Roberts has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for the past 17 years with the sole interest in hip replacement, primary, revision which includes extensive use of the uncemented prosthesis of both acetabulum and femur.  His current practice includes larger bearing sizes, advanced ceramic and dual mobility cups depending upon the nature and assessment of the patient.

He utilises the posterior approach for hip replacement. He teaches internationally about this method of hip replacement and the choice of implants to optimise patient outcomes. He usually performs over 300 hip replacements per yer.

Interest and research in the avoidance of surgical infection has led to a novel use of implantable antibiotics, specific preoperative antibiotic regimes, preoperative screen and clean protocols. He has strong working ties with the Infectious disease and Microbiology departments to allow tailored and focused care of the referred infected hip arthroplasty patient.

Within a team framework working closely with the anaesthetic team they have achieved significantly reduced rates of blood transfusion due to their methods of preoperative preparation, operative technique and cell salvage for primary hip replacement patients.

Mr Roberts organised the collection and designed the methodology for cancellous core preparation from femoral heads. He gained a working knowledge of the use and programming of material testing machines and have gained a wider understanding of biomechanics.
