Peter Magnussen trained in London, qualifying at UCL in 1977. His first years were at this teaching hospital as a houseman and demonstrating anatomy before working as a surgeon in a missionary Hospital in Zululand with his wife Mari. He then began his surgical training in the UK rotating through Norwich, Southampton and London before higher surgical training at the Bristol University Hospitals. During this time he undertook fellowships in Australia and Sweden before becoming Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Rowley Bristow Orthopaedic Hospital at St Peter's in 1990. in 1995 he moved to the Royal Surrey County Hospital to develop the hand and upper limb service and has been in practice for twenty-nine years. He has just retired from his NHS practice but continues to be fully available in private practice.
His major interests are hand, wrist and upper limb conditions both simple and complex. He works in partnership with senior specialised hand therapists and imaging colleagues to offer the very best standard of treatment. He continues to lecture, train and chairs The Regional Hand Surgery Group

Peter Magnussen has published several papers on various aspects of hand and knee surgery including tendon injury, scaphoid reconstruction, knee ligament reconstruction and knee arthroplasty. He currently supervises Specialist Registrar research projects including thumb joint replacement and treatment to reconstruct the mal-united wrist.
Peter Magnussen is one of the most experienced hand surgeons in the South West Thames Region and is involved in teaching and training the registrars. He organises the Regional Training programme for hand surgery. He is a regular attendee of the British Society of Surgery to the Hand meetings and advanced wrist and hand courses as a participant and as a teacher.
