Profile

He has special interests in reconstruction and functional urology in both men and women. He leads the urinary incontinence service in the urology department offering a range of treatment options with an excellent collaboration with the urogynecologist. Our data are audited nationally by the British Association of Urology Surgeons. Currently we are in the second position in relation to urinary incontinence surgery in England. Furthermore, he receives regional referrals for recurrence, salvage and complex incontinence procedures. Mr Hilmy leads a nationally recognised centre for management of complication from incontinence and mesh pelvic surgery.

The service offers incontinence management (for urge, stress and mixed incontinence) with investigations including urodynamics, video urodynamics, cystoscopy and treatments such as lifestyle adjustments, pelvic floor exercises, bladder retraining, Botox injections, tibial nerve stimulation (in progress), bulking agents and urethral slings performed under local or general anesthetic. In addition, management of bladder and prostate symptoms in men with full assessment and treatment including prostate resection TURP and the new treatment UroLift system (in progress).

Mr Hilmy is also involved with the management of painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis) with holistic assessment and offer wide range of treatment option including bladder installation and Elmiron (the only oral FDA approved treatment option). In addition, management of recurrent bladder infections (Cystitis and UTIs) with range of available treatment including bladder installation and the new vaccine, Uromune.

Alongside this Mr Hilmy specialise in Andrology with regards to erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, low testosterone and Peyronie’s disease using surgical, non-surgical and medical treatments.

Other conditions and treatment offer; scrotal swelling, circumcision (adults and children), blood in the urine and vasectomy.

He was nominated for Celebration of Achievement Awards by York Teaching Hospital NHS in 2016 and Clinical Teaching Excellence Award by Hull and York Medical School in 2015. Furthermore, he is the Principal Investigator for two national trials (OPEN and SIMS) and one international trial (PLESS). In addition, he is an invited reviewer for many journals and invited editorial committee member. He has an active teaching role as Lecturer and Examiner for the Hull and York Medical School.
