Mark Cheetham is Consultant General and Colorectal Surgery at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust. He welcomes referrals of patients for the following conditions / procedures: hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery, treatment of anal problems (piles, fistula, fissures, pilonidal sinus), colorectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, colitis, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, colonoscopy.
He was educated at Oswestry School, Shropshire and trained in medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School in London. He underwent Basic Surgical Training in in London and Oxford. He was a Higher Surgical Trainee on the North West Thames Rotation in London. He spent time performing clinical research in new treatments for anal conditions at St Mark’s Hospital. In the later years of his training he developed a special interest in colorectal surgery. He gained valuable experience in complex colorectal surgery during an attachment as Resident Surgical Officer at St Mark’s Hospital. He was appointed as Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust in 2005.

Mark has a varied practice across general and colorectal surgery including colonoscopy, the treatment of bowel cancer, Crohn’s disease and colitis. Mark has a special interest in the treatment of piles, anal fissure and anal fistula. He also performs gallstone and hernia surgery.
Mark contributes to the emergency general surgery service at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. He is a trainer for surgical trainees on the West Midlands rotation and is a JAG accredited colonoscopy trainer.

Mr Cheetham's research has focused on colorectal surgery. He has performed and published clinical trials of new treatments for piles, anal fissure and incontinence. More recently he recruited patients for a national study investigating the best type of follow up after bowel cancer surgery (the FACS trial).
He is a reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease and a member of the editorial board of the World Journal of Surgery.
