Mr Mahawar has been a consultant surgeon at one of the busiest bariatric units in the UK at Sunderland since April 2011. Prior to that he trained in bariatric surgery for two and a half years as a senior registrar in the North East as part of his six year training within Northern Deanery. Before this, he qualified from Calcutta Medical College in India in 1996 with multiple University Honours and Medals. Subsequently he obtained his Basic and Higher Surgical Training (at the internationally renowned Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh) in India from 1998 – 2002 before coming over to the United Kingdom.

Mr Mahawar is one of the highest volume bariatric surgeons in the UK according to the National Bariatric Surgery Registry data. His complication and reoperation rates have to be one of the best in the country and he has not had any bariatric surgery related leak or mortality till date.

Mr Mahawar routinely performs Gastric Bypass (including Mini Gastric Bypass), Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bands, and Gastric Balloons. In addition to this he performs a range of elective general surgical procedures like laparoscopic cholecystectomy (key-hole gall bladder surgery), hernia repairs, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, and a range of general surgical emergencies.

Mr Mahawar also performs diagnostic upper gastro intestinal endoscopy on a routine basis.

Personal interests

Mr Mahawar takes a passionate interest in developing different publishing models for biomedical scientists through the platform called WebmedCentral that he co-founded in 2011.

He loves reading, chess, and when he gets a chance, writing on topics all and sundry.

Mr Mahawar takes a keen interest in academic bariatric surgery and research. He serves on the editorial board of the “Obesity Surgery”, one of the two most popular journals within the speciality (he is one of the two surgeons from the UK on their editorial board). In addition Mr Mahawar is an Associate Editor of the “Clinical Obesity” and review for a number of other journals (including Nature group of journals) and organisations like National Institute of Health Research. 

In addition, Mr Mahawar is also an Honorary Associate Clinical Lecturer with Newcastle University and an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow with Sunderland University. 

He has been an invited faculty and guest speaker at a number of national and international meetings and conferences and is an active member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), the international umbrella organisation of all national bariatric societies and serves on the communication committee of the IFSO. 

Finally, Mr Mahawar takes a keen interest in the Mini Gastric Bypass and is beginning to get recognised globally for his modest contributions to developing this operation.
