About

Mr Poskitt has extensive experience in both general and vascular surgery and has served the Gloucestershire NHS Trust as a Hernia & Venous Surgeon for over 30 years.  He now works solely at the Cheltenham Nuffield Hospital providing expert care in hernia and varicose vein treatments.

Having introduced keyhole surgery to Cheltenham for hyperhidrosis (excess sweating) and gallbladder surgery, he subsequently introduced keyhole hernia surgery and keyhole varicose vein treatment to Cheltenham with his surgical colleague, Mr Mark Whyman. From 2004/5 they were able to offer Totally Extra Peritoneal (TEP laparoscopic surgery) for abdominal herniae and both duplex guided foam sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for varicose veins.

Over the last 15 years, he has performed well over 2,500 keyhole and 1,000 open procedures for all types of herniae including inguinal, femoral, obturator, spigelian, incisional and recurrent paraumbilical. Patients with a hernia require individual assessment to have a bespoke treatment plan. Some patients may not require surgery and can be treated conservatively. Others may require a procedure under local anaesthesia to reduce surgical risk and those fit for general anaesthesia would be offered keyhole (laparoscopic) procedure as a quality option.

Mr Poskitt established a Leg Ulcer Service to Cheltenham and then Gloucestershire in 1995 and has offered an accurate assessment to identify the cause (most commonly leaking vein valves) and then treat in early times, by surgery and subsequently with less invasive foam sclerotherapy and RFA. He and his team have now performed several thousand endovenous (Foam and RFA) procedures.

Mr Poskitt served the Gloucestershire NHS Trust as a General/Vascular Surgeon for over 30 years.  He now works solely at the Cheltenham Nuffield Hospital providing expert care in hernia and varicose vein treatments.
