Originally from Cape Town, Iain McFadyen is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a specialist trauma practice at the Major Trauma Centre in Stoke-on-Trent. He undertook specialist orthopaedic training in Bristol, with further fellowship training in trauma and limb reconstruction in Bristol, Oxford, and a short period in New York. Mr McFadyen was a consultant in Gloucester before spending five years in Brighton leading the establishment of the South Coast’s Major Trauma Centre and Network. He has performed joint replacement surgery for fractures and arthritis of the hip throughout his consultant career.
Mr McFadyen is recognised as an expert in treating upper and lower limb fractures and teaches on instructional course for surgeons at advanced and masters level throughout the world. He is currently a chairman of three highly regarded instructional courses, the AO Europe Masters course on intramedullary nailing, the AO Europe Masters course on bone reconstruction and the AO UK Current Concepts in Trauma Management course. He is also co-chairman of the guideline development group at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) developing guidelines for treating fractures in the NHS.

Mr McFadyen was a team doctor at Gloucester Rugby Club for seven years, including Match Day duties at Premiership and European League games. He remains a keen rugby supporter.

Mr McFadyen has published research on hip fractures and limb injuries in numerous peer review journals. He is also on the editorial review panels for three major scientific journals: Injury, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and The Journal of Orthopedic Trauma. He has authored two book chapters in limb injuries for international textbooks.
