Profile

Evert Smith is a highly experienced surgeon with clinical, surgical and research expertise in primary, complex primary and revision total hip replacement and knee replacement surgery. He introduced minimally invasive surgery (MIS) of the hip to the south west of England and regularly practices this technique. He is committed to advancing medical practice and improving outcomes in hip arthroplasty.

After completing his undergraduate medical degree in South Africa, Mr Smith developed extensive experience in trauma and orthopaedics at Soweto and Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. He also worked in Germany where he studied aspects of hip and knee replacement surgery. In 1991 he was awarded the Lillie Research Fellowship and continued his studies in total joint replacements at the Arthroplasty Unit of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. It was here that he developed an interest in biomedical materials science and implant design.

As a surgeon developer with a particular interest in the acetabular cup (shell), his insightful understanding of hip architecture led him to design the Exceed ABT acetabular system and he is the inventor of the Exceed ABT 15-degree face-changing cup with Biomet UK.
