Mr Ablett is a consultant vascular surgeon in the NHS and a Surgeon Commander in the Royal Navy.
He graduated from Glasgow University, joined the Royal Navy after basic surgical training and completed higher surgical training in Edinburgh then did a 1-year fellowship in London before taking up consultant practice at The Royal Stoke University Hospital. He has a wide vascular surgical practice including endovenous and open surgery for varicose veins, abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery, lower limb revascularisation for peripheral vascular disease, carotid artery surgery, vascular access surgery for renal haemodialysis, emergency vascular surgery, surgical management of the diabetic foot, major trauma surgery and amputations.
In the Royal Navy he has completed the All Arms Commando Course (earning the green beret) and has deployed twice to Afghanistan. Once in a frontline role supporting The Royal Marines and once as a surgeon at the Field Hospital at Camp Bastion. He completed a Masters degree in trauma surgery in 2013 and the subject of his dissertation was lower limb salvage in UK soldiers injured in modern combat.
He has a keen interest in medical education and surgical training, teaches students from Keele university on a weekly basis and supervises surgeons in training.

Mr Ablett undertook research into outcomes after lower limb salvage in UK service personnel injured in modern combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. This formed the subject for his MSc dissertation and was presented at an international military trauma conference.
He has presented at numerous national and international conferences and has published in numerous journals on topics including surgical training, surgical technique, surgical review articles and case studies.
He is currently supervising an MSc research project on blunt thoracic aortic injury and is overseeing projects into outcomes after endovascular aneurysm repair and implementation of new care pathways for NHS patients with varicose veins
