Mr Arun Pherwani is Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent from May 2003.
He trained in Belfast and Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Vascular Surgery with Trauma, and Surgery of Renal Failure & Transplantation.
He was the first pure vascular surgeon to be appointed at the UHNS and with his colleagues has led the reconfiguration and expansion of elective and emergency vascular services for Staffordshire and South Cheshire, with the UHNS as "hub" and Mid Staffordshire, Leighton and now Burton Hospitals as "spokes" of the Vascular Network and Alliance
He is the Director of the Staffordshire and South Cheshire AAA Screening Programme and the West Midlands representative on the National CRG for Vascular Surgery. He is also an advisor on an NCEPOD lower limb amputation study

The Staffordshire and South Cheshire AAA Screening Programme has been supported from its outset by the Stoke City Football Club and its ex-players. This led to the formation of ‘SAVE Charity’ – (Staffordshire Aneurysm Vascular and Endovascular) as part of UHNS Charity to help serve patients with vascular disease, particularly patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
Mr Pherwani enjoys providing surgical vascular access for hemodialysis for particularly disadvantaged patients from under-privileged areas in Seychelles and India, and training surgeons in these areas to provide these services.

Mr Pherwani's research was on Thrombophilia and the genetic predisposition to thrombosis as a cause of graft loss in renal transplantation funded by the Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke Association and the Northern Ireland Kidney Research Fund. He was awarded an MPhil by the Queens University Belfast in 2001.
He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has been invited to Lecture on national and international courses.
His current research interests are around reducing the mortality from AAA surgery with peri-operative pharmacological protection and AAA screening & more recently autologous and allogenic stem cell therapy in critical limb ischaemia. He has also been an investigator in national trials.
