Professor Sheen qualified in medicine from the University of Dundee in 1993 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1998. He obtained a Doctorate in 2003 from the University of Manchester, followed by his final specialist fellowship from the Intercollegiate Board in General Surgery in 2005. Professor Sheen undertook training in General Surgery in London, Oxford and Manchester following which he undertook specialised HepatoPancreato-Biliary training in both Manchester and Leeds.
Professor Sheen's main interests are diseases of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile duct as well as hernia surgery. He has expertise in advanced laparoscopic 'keyhole' surgery and mainly undertakes procedures for the treatment of gallstones, cancers of the liver and pancreas, and various hernias including sportsman’s groin.
He was appointed Consultant General Surgeon in December 2005 at Manchester Royal Infirmary and has to date undertaken over 1000 laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures and approximately 600 major cancer procedures involving the liver and pancreas. He has also undertaken over 600 inguinal hernia repairs as well as over 100 complex incisional hernias, 60-80% of which he undertakes laparoscopically.

Professor Sheen has received an honorary chair from MMU due to his continuing contribution to research and education in the field of surgery. He has wide areas of interests which include, groin pain, the use of tissue glue in inguinal hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction, pancreas cancer, pancreatitis, liver cancer and targeting immune therapy for secondary liver cancer. Professor Sheen has also written book chapters and undertakes large randomised controlled trials. He is an invited speaker to many learned meetings as well as scientific conferences.
