Mr Callear has a broad experience base in general ophthalmology from his training in Birmingham and Cambridge and specialises in both cataract and vitreoretinal surgery. He provides a single-handed retina service for retinal detachment, macular hole and epiretinal membrane for Shropshire and Mid-Wales, taking tertiary referrals from neighbouring counties and West Wales.
Mr Callear also performs both small-incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery and the new Microincision Cataract surgery and has the experience of 5,000 cases to date.

Ophthalmology (Small incision cataract surgery/vitreoretinal surgery)
Mr Callear has been audit lead for Ophthalmology for 12 years. He undertakes continuous prospective audit of his entire vitreo-retinal work-load to ensure his practice is above the nationally set standard and also undertakes the same for cataract surgery by regular sampling.
Personal interests include cycling, hill-walking, gardening, cooking, family life and computers.

Since becoming a Consultant in 1999, Mr Callear has continued to conduct a research programme for junior doctors, and has had several pubications in this area.
