This is the medical review of hormone therapy for transgender patients.

Am I eligible for treatment?

New patients should have been assessed by a psychologist / psychiatrist specialised in the transgender field. Patients who are already established on hormone therapy can also be reviewed, from a medical perspective. It is rare that there are absolute contraindications to commencing or continuing hormone therapy, that cannot be resolved.

What is the process and timescales involved?

New patients, once assessed by a psychologist / psychiatrist specialised in the transgender field, should contact the outpatient department at their nearest Nuffield Health hospital that offers this service to arrange an appointment. The first appointment should be at least 3 weeks after that initial assessment elsewhere, to allow access to the written report from the consultation.

What are the expected results?

The focus will be on safe prescribing of cross sex hormone therapy, considering previous medical history and all other medications. If no problems are found, or once any issues are resolved, the outcome will be the onset or continuation of this hormone therapy.

Are there any complications I should be aware of?

Prescribing of cross-sex hormone therapy through established guidelines, as used at the NHS Gender Identity Clinic in London (the largest in the country) should be considered safe. Any small risks of hormone therapy will be fully outlined at a consultation.
