What is the test?

Restech pH study will accurately report on pH levels at the throat level, which is an important step in the diagnostic process to determine if you truly have reflux.

The results of this study will then allow your consultant to recommend the most appropriate, targeted treatment plan to address your acid reflux condition.

Is this test right for me?

pH testing can be particularly useful in patients with irregular reflux symptoms (e.g. chronic cough, sinusitis, throat clearing and hoarseness), as well as those who are non-responsive to medications to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

What happens during the test?

A catheter, less than one millimetre wide, is gently placed through the nose and sits just behind the uvula. On the tip of the catheter is a pH probe sensor. With no need for anaesthetic, this procedure is well tolerated as the sensor sits high in the airway meaning swallowing, speaking and normal activities should not be affected.

During the 24-hour study, the probe sensor will take a pH reading every ½ second. The sensor is unique in its ability to function accurately anywhere in the upper digestive tract and therefore reports precise values of both liquid and aerosol pH levels in real time.

The patient is required to input any pertinent information such as symptoms, meals and when lying flat in to the attached monitor.

The data captured within the monitor illustrates the patients reflux patterns and severity which is then analysed by the consultant to obtain a definitive diagnosis in 24 hours.

Preparing for the test

Stop taking PPI’s / antacids two weeks before undergoing the test.

Driving after the test

The test does not involve any sedation or anaesthesia; therefore, patients can drive soon after the treatment

The test complications

Overall, Restech pH study is very safe; however, minor side effects might include slight soreness or bleeding in your nose for a day or so afterwards.

Occasionally, you may experience sneezing, which usually stops immediately after the test. Complications are extremely rare but may include deviated septum, nasal congestion or infection.
