About

Marie is a consultant clinical psychologist and a health psychologist, and also a Professor of Psychology at the University of Hull.

She is highly specialised in human eating behaviour. She trained in the Feeding and Eating Disorders Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital and has also practiced in Glasgow, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders. She is currently Consultant Clinical Psychologist in a specialist service in Hull for people who are seriously obese and considering bariatric surgery. She has an international reputation for her research on human eating.

As well as treating people with eating disorders and obesity, she is also experienced at treating depression, anxiety, stress, phobias, recovering from traumatic events such as accidents and bereavements, coping effectively with serious physical health problems, psychological management of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and other endocrinological disorders, coping effectively with the psychological effects of other long term health conditions including cardiovascular problems, cancers and physical disabilities, interpersonal problems at work, relationship problems in private life, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours.

Marie enjoys spending time with her young family, walking the dog, interior decorating, gardening and running the local book club.

Research

Human eating behaviour is her major specialism in both research and clinical practice and she has published over 50 papers in this field. Research topics include effects of carbohydrates on body mass and behaviour, effects of eating on mood and mood management, food outcome expectancies, service users perspectives on their conditions and their treatment, making lifestyle improvements with people with intellectual disabilities, the life stories of people with physical or mental health problems.
