About
Following a General Surgical Training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, Mr Groot-Wassink gained specialist training in upper gastrointestinal surgery in East Anglia and London. In addition he trained in international centres of excellence at MSK New York, Johns Hopkins Baltimore, Charite Berlin and Heidelberg.
He was appointed as a consultant general and hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeon in 2006. In his practice he routinely performs laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder/bile duct diseases, reflux/hiatus hernia, appendicectomies, groin and incisional hernias. He has specialist experience in surgery to the liver (liver resection) and pancreas. He has also developed a practice in hyperparathyroidism surgery for hypercalcaemia and osteoporosis.
Mr Groot-Wassink performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies of the stomach and large bowel.
As part of his general surgical work he routinely performs operations on the large and small bowel.

Research
Mr Groot-Wassink has a strong academic background gaining both a MD and PhD. He was awarded a MD following research investigating aspects of monoclonal antibody production for pharmaceuticals.
His PhD was awarded by Imperial College, London following 3 years of research at the Hammersmith Hospital. This work was funded by a prestigious grant from the Medical Research Council and investigated the delivery of gene therapy vectors by positron emission tomography. This was with the specific aim of delivering new biological drugs to pancreatic cancer tissues.
He is the Surgeon Champion for the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust.
