About

Mr Sidath Liyanage is a Consultant Ophthalmologist who specialises in cataract surgery; vitreoretinal surgery on conditions including macular holes, epiretinal membranes and retinal detachment surgery; and medical treatment of retinal conditions (medical retina), including macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and vascular disorders of the retina.

Mr Liyanage studied medicine at University College London, qualifying third in his year with distinctions. While in medical school, he won the Duke Elder undergraduate prize examination, held by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for aspiring ophthalmologists.

He underwent his ophthalmic specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Upon completion of his training, he was awarded the Harcourt medal by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for first place in their international consultant examinations. Following this, he furthered his specialist interest in retinal conditions by training as a fellow at Moorfields Eye Hospital, spending one year managing medical retina conditions and two years performing vitreoretinal surgery.

Mr Liyanage currently leads the vitreoretinal service at the Bristol Eye Hospital, and is actively involved in teaching on their international fellowship programme that teaches surgeons advanced surgical techniques. He has also lectured on national and international instructional courses in vitreoretinal surgery.

Research

In 2012, Mr Liyanage was awarded £250,000 in a national competitive process by the Medical Research Council and Fight for Sight to investigate new ways of treating wet age-related macular degeneration. He performed his research at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London and was awarded a PhD by University College London for its successful completion.

He is currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol and participates in clinical research trials on new treatments for medical retinal conditions such as macular degeneration. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers on clinical ophthalmology and basic science research in international journals. He also sits on the board of trustees for the National Eye Research Charity.
