About

Robert Purbrick is a Consultant Ophthalmologist based in Brighton and Haywards Heath

He works as an NHS Consultant at Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, where he is Clinical Lead for the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) service and Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. 

Robert has subspecialty expertise in Medical Retina. He qualified from Liverpool Medical School in 2004 and carried out his postgraduate ophthalmology training in London, Liverpool and Oxford.

Robert has a special interest in cataract surgery and the management of retinal diseases including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, retinal vascular occlusions, and central serous retinopathy (CSR). 

Robert has completed comprehensive specialty training in ophthalmology as per the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ postgraduate curriculum.

Research

Robert spent two years as a Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology, University of Oxford, investigating the effect of ocular diseases on sleep and circadian rhythms. He is currently enrolled as a postgraduate student at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London, completing his MD(Res) thesis. 

He continues to research and publish in many aspects of ophthalmology, including diabetic retinopathy, ocular toxicity of drugs, medical education, retinal imaging, the ageing eye, glaucoma diagnosis, treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), complications of cataract surgery, and the patients’ role in the decision-making process.

Robert is a Principal Investigator for CLARITY, a clinical trial investigating the efficacy of intravitreal anti-VEGF injections versus laser for the treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
