About
Richard graduated as a doctor from St.George’s Hospital Medical School, London in 2000. During his training he was awarded a BSc for his work in sports physiology. He carried out his basic surgical training on the Reading and Oxford surgical rotation where he first developed an interest in shoulder and elbow surgery. He was awarded the Girdlestone Scholarship from Oxford University and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, where he worked as a clinical research fellow. Following this, he gained a doctorate for his work on rotator cuff tendon failure. He has spent many years lecturing and tutoring Oxford University medical students.
He carried out his Orthopaedic higher surgical training on the Oxford programme. In 2013, Richard was offered a fellowship with the Brisbane Upper Limb Unit, which involved working in the major trauma centre for Queensland, Australia. He worked there for 12 months, gaining further experience in all aspects of upper limb surgery, including performing replantations. During this time he also became an Associate Lecturer for Queensland University.
In 2014, he was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Tunbridge Wells and Maidstone Hospitals.
Personal interests
Richard’s wife is a GP and he has 2 children and a black Labrador. He is passionate about sport and particularly enjoys cycling, football and rugby.

Research
Mr Benson was awarded the Girdlestone Scholarship. As part of this, he carried out research on rotator cuff failure at Oxford University. His work has gained international acclaim and he was awarded the prestigious Didier Patte Prize by the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in 2009. He has been invited to present his work internationally and his work has helped to provide the scientific basis for future biological treatments of the rotator cuff.
Richard has publications on many aspects of orthopaedic surgery and has presented work both nationally and internationally.
