About

Mr Rana Sayeed was appointed as a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Oxford Heart Centre in 2007, having completed his training in cardiothoracic surgery at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge with a one-year fellowship at the University of Toronto. He was awarded his PhD in 2005 after three years’ research into the mechanisms of heart disease at the University of Cambridge.

Mr Sayeed offers a broad range of adult cardiac surgical procedures including coronary artery bypass surgery and aortic valve replacement. His particular sub-specialist interest is mitral valve repair (repairing rather than replacing a diseased mitral valve), often in conjunction with tricuspid valve repair or ablation of atrial fibrillation; he has a high rate of repair for degenerative mitral valve disease (mitral valve prolapse).

In addition to his clinical role, Mr Sayeed is involved in the training and examination of junior cardiothoracic surgeons as a Member of the Specialty Advisory Committee in Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Chair of the Intercollegiate Specialty (exam) Board. He has been Clinical Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Oxford Heart Centre and remains Directorate Clinical Governance Lead; he is a strong advocate for patient-focussed care and robust clinical governance to maintain the highest clinical standards.
