About
Mr Riera is a Consultant Laparoscopic Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon specialising in weight loss and metabolic surgery, including laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band and intragastric balloons. He also provides laparoscopic surgery for most upper GI benign conditions, including gallstone disease , gastrooesophageaL reflux, achalasia, paraoesophageal hernia, common bile duct stones and complications of pancreatitis as well as all types of laparoscopic hernia repair. He is also a fully accredited (JAG) upper GI endoscopist.
Other interests
Gastro-oesophageal reflux, gall stone disease, obesity and the metabolic syndrome, hernia surgery.

Research
Mr Riera researched into the mechanisms of peritoneal metastasis from gastric cancer and was awarded an MD by the University of Liverpool. As a Specialist Registrar in the East of England he trained in upper GI and Bariatric Surgery. Before being appointed a Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, Mr Riera also worked as a Consultant at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, a Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.
