After graduating from St Thomas’ Hospital, John Elston’s ophthalmological training was at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street with a Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore USA. He was appointed to UK Consultant Ophthalmology posts at the National Hospital Queen Square and St Mary’s Hospital, London then from 1990 to 2015 at the Oxford Eye Hospital. He is now Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the John Radcliffe and also works at Birmingham Children’s and the Royal Berkshire Hospitals.
Mr Elston is a former President of the European Strabismological Association and Master of the Oxford Ophthalmological Congress. He has been Visiting Professor in Ophthalmology at the Wills Eye Institute, Philadelphia and Sydney Eye Hospital. He has given 6 named Guest Lectures and has over 70 peer-reviewed publications.
He works closely with Senior Orthoptist Caroline Dodridge.
