About

Mr Southgate has been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at The Royal Bournemouth and Poole Hospitals since 1998. He qualified in 1986 and carried out orthopaedic surgical training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore and then on the Wessex rotation based from Southampton. He was appointed the Hand Fellow at Sydney Hospital, Australia for a year, where he completed his specialist training in all aspects of Hand Surgery.

As a consultant he has developed sub specialist interests of hand, wrist and elbow surgery treating all conditions, trauma and sports injuries. He has a particular interest in minimal invasive surgery such as arthroscopy of the wrist and minimal invasive surgery for Dupuytren's contracture and arthritis of the base of the thumb.  He works closely with hand therapists who treat patients both in the private sector and in the NHS. Mr Southgate has written several papers and presented research at international scientific meetings including the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, The Australian Hand Society and at the International Federation for Surgical Societies of the Hand.

He is strongly committed to teaching to all medical personnel and regularly lectures on surgical training programmes both in hand surgery and anatomy. He is a member of the British Medical Association, the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
