About

Mr Tysome is a Consultant ENT surgeon based at Cambridge University Hospitals. He treats both children (from birth) and adults with general ENT problems, specialising in hearing and balance issues, Eustachian tube dysfunction, sinusitis, paediatric ENT problems, hearing implantation and skull base surgery. He pioneered the introduction of balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube in the UK and regularly sees patients with complex ENT problems referred from other ENT surgeons.

Mr Tysome has worked in London, Cambridge and California and has won many academic prizes. He is an Affiliated Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge where he supervises PhD students. He is NHS England National Clinical Lead for Specialised Ear Surgery, Vice-Chair of the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) Interventional Procedures Committee which Is responsible for evaluating and recommending new operations in England. He has published 150 research papers and is Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Otolaryngology, a leading academic ENT journal. He holds national leadership positions in education and research at the Royal Society of Medicine, British Skull Base Society and ENT UK.

Personal interests

Mr Tysome spends most of his spare time with his wife and three young children. He also enjoys running, cycling and swimming and competes in long distance triathlons and ultramarathons.

Research

Mr Tysome, has an active research and teaching programme, being regularly invited to present his work internationally.  He is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Otolaryngology, one of the world’s leading ENT journals, has edited four ENT books and published over 75 research papers.

Mr Tysome is an Associate Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge Clinical School and a member of Cambridge University Health Partners Innovation Panel. He advises companies on product design and has received grant funding for early stage development of medical innovations.
