About
Mr Sivakumar an experienced neurosurgeon with a dual fellowship in functional neurosurgery and paediatric neurosurgery. He has performed over 3000 surgeries since he started training in various fields of neurosurgery. His infection rate is extremely low compared to the national average.
Over the last 10 years since commencing his career in neurosurgery Mr Sivakumar has gained extensive and broad experience in all aspects of the speciality including paediatrics and adult neurosurgery. He has updated his personal practices and knowledge by reflective practice and self-directed learning, as well as attending internal and external seminars, courses and meetings both nationally and internationally.
Since his appointment on 1st April 2013 in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals he has established the following:
- Introduced Functional Neurosurgery to the Unit
- Established a multi-displinary network to manage spasticity in adults
- Lead role in epilepsy surgery (adult) and established network with Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, London, for paediatric epilepsy services in Leeds
- Joined with pain services to offer spinal cord stimulator implantation service
- Established a pathway and team to operate on high grade gliomas in eloquent areas including awake resections
- Established stereotactic neurosurgery in the Unit
- In the process of starting deep brain stimulation for various disorders

Mr Sivakumar understands the importance and value of research which plays an important role in modern NHS and in the professional development of neuroscience trainees. He has been in the recruitment process in the ICP rescue, Stitch I and II trial conducted nationally. He developed a keen interest in clinically oriented research projects and has published on this subject.
