About

Professor Ben Turney is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Nuffield Health Oxford, The Manor Hospital. Ben is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He was an undergraduate in Cambridge and undertook surgical training in the Oxford region. He has completed research for both an MSc and DPhil (= PhD) in Oxford.  He also obtained a diploma in university level teaching in 2006 from the University of Oxford. 

Ben is trained in general urology and is available to see all general urology problems. He has a special interest in kidney stones and benign prostate surgery and is the founder of the Oxford Stone Group. This group exists to improve the management of kidney stones through research and training. Ben has supervised 8 DPhil students. 

Ben has driven the introduction of several new urological treatments in Oxford: fixed site lithotripter (2009), 100W laser for stone and prostate surgery (2012), Urolift procedure (2017), REZUM procedure (2019), Thulium fibre laser (2021). Ben introduced international training fellowships in stone surgery in Oxford (2013); one of only three such centres recognised in Europe. These fellowships have trained stone surgeons from Hong Kong, Germany, New Zealand, Turkey and India. 

Ben served for 5 years as an elected member of the National BAUS Section of Endourology Committee. Ben is Director of the Masters course in Surgical Science and Practice, University of Oxford. He is the managing partner of Oxford Urology Associates.

Research

Ben has had a career long interest in research and has been publishing papers regularly since 1996. Ben believes that better understanding will drive better treatment. Ben’s research focus is on kidney stone disease and surgical technology. He has collaborations with several departments in Oxford (e.g. Engineering Sciences, Mathematics) and is working with several industry partners (e.g. Boston Scientific, Oneview Health, 3D lifeprints, Lumenis) to bring cutting edge technology to the clinic. Work from his research is presented regularly at international meetings and published in peer reviewed journals. Ben is invited regularly to give presentations at national and international meetings.
