About

Alastair Lamb is a Consultant Urological surgeon with particular expertise in prostate cancer and robotic surgery. He works as an Honorary Consultant Urologist at The Churchill Hospital Cancer Centre and is a Cancer Research UK Clinician scientist fellow working at The University of Oxford.

Clinically, his focus is to deliver excellent and timely prostate cancer care to men referred from the Oxford regional area, focusing on state-of-the-art diagnostics with multiparametric MRI and targeted transperineal biopsies, followed by robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) with the da Vinci robot or indeed active surveillance where appropriate. He also recognises the value of expert PSA counselling.

He has a particular interest in pushing the boundaries of minimal access surgery MIS, for example performing cytoreductive radical prostatectomy in locally advanced or metastatic disease or in fit, older men when such approaches are deemed safe and evidence-based. He also has an interest in novel molecular imaging techniques such as PSMA PET-CT and the use of such modalities in disease stratification and selection of patients for surgery.

By way of background, he joined The Churchill Urology team in April 2017 and Oxford Urology Associates at the Manor in April 2018, having previously completed a one-year robotic specialty training fellowship at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to this, he studied at Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, with initial surgical training in Edinburgh followed by higher surgical training in Cambridge, including a PhD in cancer biology with Professor David Neal.

Research

Alastair is a Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist and spends 50% of his time in research at Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford.

His research goal is to provide a robust molecular platform for accurate decision-making in early stage prostate cancer. He has spent his scientific training investigating how individual genes or groups of genes have driven prostate cancer behaviour. His PhD thesis investigated the role of HES6 as a transcriptional driver in castrate resistant prostate cancer – he found that this single gene fundamentally changed the nature of prostate cancer cells. Since then, he has been employing integrative genomics in prostate cancer risk stratification as well as disease modelling with patient derived xenografts.

His current work - for which he has received £1.15M of funding from Cancer Research UK - is to identify micrometastases in the blood stream and lymph channels in high-risk localised prostate cancer and to establish a detailed genomic fingerprint of these cancer cells. The intention is to identify groups of potentially metastatic cells in the prostate itself at prostatectomy and, more importantly, in biopsies at diagnosis. This would allow focused treatment of such men, while other men can be managed more conservatively.
