About
Alex was raised in Manchester, attending Bolton School, then moved to Leeds to study Medicine. Following an intercalated BSc in Pathological Sciences, he continued clinical studies and qualified in 2000. He trained as a Paediatric Surgeon in Manchester and Liverpool.
With urology a major component of his early training, he embarked upon a PhD programme to develop a novel technique of bladder augmentation using tissue engineering techniques. This was undertaken at the University of York where he was awarded a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship and a Royal College of Surgeons of England Research Fellowship. His work attracted the Best Thesis Award from the European Society for Paediatric Urology (ESPU) and the Best Paper by a Young Urologist Award from the European Association of Urology. He is a Fellow of the European Academy of Paediatric Urologists.
Alex currently works in Leeds as a Consultant Paediatric Urologist and Surgeon. His interests include genital reconstruction for disorders of sexual differentiation, bladder and kidney surgery and minimally invasive techniques utilising the Da Vinci Robotic device. He is active in teaching and training nationally and internationally, reviews manuscripts for a number of journals and is active in the ESPU.
