About

Having achieved a degree at Cambridge University Dr Podd completed his clinical training at St George’s Medical School in London qualifying as a doctor in June 2000. His continuing medical training was undertaken at St George’s Hospital, Eastbourne General Hospital, The Royal and County Hospital, Guys and St Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital ensuring a broad and well-balanced experience which underpins his specialist cardiology knowledge and skills. During this period, he was awarded membership of the Royal College of Physicians. To consolidate his extensive general experience, he spent two years in New Zealand working as an Intensive Care and Cardiology registrar.

Dr Podd has an enduring passion for teaching and having been awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education he maintains his expertise in this area through an ongoing teaching commitment at Exeter Medical School. Additionally, he dedicated three years to research novel drugs and device and ablation therapies for atrial fibrillation with supporting publications detailing his findings.

Once he had completed his general cardiology training, he undertook additional specialist training in the advanced management of arrhythmias. He is a highly skilled and respected operator in the implantation of simple and complex devices including pacemakers, defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy and electrophysiological studies. Additionally, he is an acknowledged expert in ablations, ablation of supraventricular tachycardias, ventricular ectopics and ventricular tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation and atrial tachycardias. He has a particular interest and specific expertise in the ablation of atrial fibrillation and atrial tachycardias.

Dr Podd joined The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital’s cardiology department as a consultant specialising in Electrophysiology and Devices in 2016. The Cardiology Department perform a high volume of simple and complex devices and has recently started a subcutaneous ICD service.

Dr Steven Podd is one of five directors of Exeter Heart, which owns non-invasive cardiology equipment. Consultants who use this equipment charge their own fees for doing so. A fee for use of the equipment is negotiated between Exeter Heart or Nuffield Health Exeter Hospital and patients' private medical insurer by reference to the investigatory procedure undertaken. Exeter Heart's staff, maintenance and other running costs come out of this hospital fee.
