About

Dr Cochrane was appointed as a Consultant in Plymouth in 2005 after training in Oxford, London and Dublin. He is an experienced gastroenterologist and general physician and expert endoscopist. He is a nationally accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist and performs all modalities of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy including gastroscopy, colonoscopy and ERCP. He has particular expertise in the endoscopic treatment of Barretts oesophagus and early gastrointestinal cancers employing advanced endoscopic and NICE accredited radiofrequency ablation techniques. He also performs gastrointestinal physiology and pH studies using state-of-the-art high-resolution manometry technology.

Dr Cochrane graduated from Oxford University with an Honours Degree in Physiology (1991) and a Bachelor of Medicine/ Bachelor of Surgery (1994). After house jobs in Oxford and Plymouth, he completed his postgraduate medical training at Northwick Park & St Marks and Charing Cross Hospital in London (1996). He then undertook higher specialist training in gastroenterology in London working at St Marys and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.
From 2000-2003 Dr Cochrane worked in St. Vincent’s University Hospital Dublin and at Irelands National Liver Transplant Unit and was also awarded an MD Thesis by the National University of Ireland (UCD). His research was into inflammatory bowel disease and microbial interactions with the gut.

He undertook an endoscopy fellowship in Milan, Italy in 2004 before completing his specialist training in London in 2005.
He has worked as a consultant gastroenterologist in Plymouth since 2005 where he treats patients with cancer, inflammatory, functional and infectious conditions. His specialist interest is in endoscopy. He is clinical governance lead and his outcomes are regularly audited and benchmarked against national standards.
