Dr Schofield was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital in 1988. He has worked as a general cardiologist since then, looking after patients with cardiovascular disease in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. His sub-specialty interest is cardiac intervention – particularly coronary artery stenting for patients with underlying coronary artery disease. He also looks after patients with valvular heart disease, heart failure, cardiomyopathy and various forms of heart rhythm disturbance. He has access to a wide range of investigations and treatment when assessing patients who have symptoms which may be caused by underlying cardiovascular disease.
During his career, he has held various roles related to his clinical practice. He has been the Clinical Director of Cardiac Services at Papworth Hospital and has been a member of the hospital’s Trust Board. He has been the Chairman of the Anglia Cardiac Network which was responsible for the provision of cardiac services in the East of England. He was the secretary of the British Cardiac Society for four years. He has also held a National Clinical Excellence award (Silver).
Dr Schofield has been married to his wife, Anne, for over 35 years. They have 2 children and 3 grandchildren.

Research
Dr Schofield has over 150 publications in peer- reviewed journals. He has published widely in the field of cardiovascular medicine. One of his major research interests has been the development and assessment of new technologies to investigate and treat patients with cardiovascular disease.
He has written and published five books in areas of cardiovascular disease. He has also supervised the work of several trainees in cardiology in respect of their MD theses.
