About

Professor Patrick Kiely qualified in medicine from the University of London in 1988 and gained a PhD  degree in experimental immunology from the University of Cambridge in 1996. 

He was appointed consultant physician and rheumatologist at St George’s Hospital in London in 1999 and has been department lead from 2002-2018. He was promoted to Honorary Reader in Rheumatology at St George’s University of 

London in 2017. He has a major research interest in the management of rheumatoid arthritis, especially optimal use of conventional and biologic agents. 

He was a co-author of the 1999 NICE clinical guidelines for the management of RA, and the NICE quality standards for RA in 2011. 

He has clinical interests in all inflammatory arthropathies, also myositis, vasculitis and haemochromatosis.

He is an Associate Editor for ‘Rheumatology’, and chairman of the SW London, Surrey and Sussex Regional Rheumatology Network, and lectures on rheumatic diseases throughout the UK and internationally. 

He is clinical advisor to the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS) and to Haemochromatosis UK

Research

He was a founder member of the UK Early Rheumatoid Arthritis Network (ERAN) in 2002, a multicentre inception cohort of patients with early RA. This has resulted in several important publications on the impact of patient specific factors and treatments on achieving remission and other outcomes.

He has over 100 peer reviewed publications.

Current research focuses on optimisation of outcomes in rheumatoid arthritis, haemochromatosis arthropathy and guideline development in adult myositis.
