About

Dr Mathis Heydtmann studied at Mainz and Düsseldorf University with electives in several European countries. He passed the German and US medical licensing exams before working in the liver unit in Berne, Switzerland, then in Manchester, and he did his Specialist Registrar training in Birmingham. He trained in all aspects of Hepatology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Liver Transplant Unit Birmingham

He now works part time in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, which allows him to dedicate more time in his interests in public health and health inequalities.  He is a strong advocate for patients the deprived and often underserved patients with liver disease.  For example, in the beginning of the pandemic, he lobbied to get our sickest patients with liver disease onto the national shielding lists.

Having worked in liver units for 8 years of his training, Dr Heydtmann has developed an early interest in all areas of acute and chronic liver disease: viral, toxic, autoimmune and genetic liver disease including alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver, chronic hepatitis B and C, primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), investigation of abnormal liver biochemistry, management of chronic liver failure, assessment of patients for liver transplant and following up liver transplant patients.

Dr Heydtmann is an advanced endoscopist, JAG-accredited colonoscopist. He is also specialist advisor to the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman and a specialty advisor to the Scottish Chief Medical Officer for liver.

Dr Heydtmann has good links with other specialists who might need to be involved in patient's care including surgeons, dieticians and addiction specialists.

Special interests

  • Management of all patients with chronic liver disease: alcohol related, metabolic liver disease (including MAFLD – Metabolic Syndrome Associated Liver Disease previously also called NASH or NAFLD), viral, genetic, toxic, autoimmune (where the immune system plays up and fights against cells in the liver).

  • Management of patients with advanced liver disease including patients with advanced cirrhosis, decompensation and who need assessment for liver transplant.

Dr Heydtmann has an interest in communication skills, he is an appraiser for revalidation by the GMC, and a tutor training advanced appraisers for Scotland.  He is a trained Mediator (Scottish Mediation) and a trained Negotiator (Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School) and he is a National Panellist for consultant appointments.
