About

Dr Girish Viswanathan is working as a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in coronary artery disease intervention in South West Cardiothoracic Centre, Derriford Hospital, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS trust, Plymouth, UK since 2014.

Girish has graduated in 1997 from India and subsequently has done post-graduation in Internal medicine from Madras Medical College and Medical University in 2001. He has completed his medical rotation in Manchester deanery and awarded with MRCP (UK) and higher speciality training in cardiology (CCT) from Wales in 2012. He also undertook advanced coronary intervention fellowship from Bournemouth till 2014.

His areas of expertise include treatment of simple and complex coronary artery disease, coronary physiology, intra coronary imaging including IVUS and OCT, coronary chronic total occlusion intervention, and cardiovascular risk factor management.  He has performed over 800 coronary interventions at Derriford hospital with Nationally published lower than expected mortality rates and complications. His cases are shown as a teaching examples at regular international meetings.

Girish also serves as the departmental lead for Clinical governance within the trust and steers a group to monitor performance of Primary PCI services for the whole region. He is responsible for data quality and submissions of National audits and Derriford was the only centre in South West to achieve the target of 72 hours in treatment patients admitted with ACS with best survival figures in the whole region.

He regularly teaches medical and dental students attached to Plymouth University and supervises the Cardiac Physiology students and Physician associates. He trains the Junior doctors for MRCP examinations and senior cardiology trainees to specialise in coronary intervention.

Research

Girish has successfully defended his PhD thesis on platelet dependent thrombogenicity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus from Newcastle University and published extensively with over 36 papers in peer reviewed journals. He has also been awarded best researcher in UK in 2014 by Diabetes UK and his work has been presented in various National and International conferences. He still holds an honorary contract with Newcastle University and trains his fellow researchers. He is currently leading 6 research projects at the Research and Development unit at Derriford Hospital.
