knee

Arthritis can affect many people. People sometimes say they have ‘rheumatism’. This general term is used to describe any sort of pain in the joints. Arthritis is a more specific term for when the joint is damaged by disease. There are other names for the different aches and pains in your body. For example, the term fibromyalgia is used to describe widespread pain in your muscles and joints.

Arthritis falls mainly into four groups:

Osteoarthritis - Where the cartilage covering the ends of the bone becomes thinner and damaged

Inflammatory arthritis - Where the joint lining becomes inflamed as in

rheumatoid arthritis

Regional musculoskeletal pain - General localised pain and tenderness

Back pain Caused by a variety of conditions, such as osteoporosis,

osteoarthritis and anklylosing spondylitis
