Laser eye surgery: what is it?

Refractive Surgery is the surgical correction of short sight (myopia), long sight (hyperopia) and astigmatism, allowing freedom from glasses. This can be achieved through a variety of surgical techniques including laser (LASIK, LASEK, PRK) and lens surgery (Clear Lens Extraction, PRELEX).

Laser vision correction involves the precise customised reshaping of the cornea to sharpen focusing of images on the retina.

The procedure takes just 10 minutes per eye and is carried out on an outpatient basis.

LaserVision correction surgery is available to anyone over 18 with a range of up to -10 short sightedness, and +6 long sightedness. It cannot treat cataracts, squints or high degrees of long or short sightedness, for which other procedures will be more appropriate.

Laser eye surgery: what to expect

Once you have had your initial consultation to discuss your specific eye condition and the appropriate laser treatment solution, you can then arrange for a convenient time to have your treatment here in our operating theatres at the Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital.

The operation is very simple and will be fully explained at your initial consultation. You will be free to go home afterwards, but will need someone to accompany you as you will not be able to drive for 24 - 48 hours afterwards. You would usually wear a protective eyeshield over the treated eye for 24 hours.
