Why go private with Nuffield Health?

Mr Ian Laidlaw, Consultant surgeon within the Nuffield Health’s breast team, is a strong advocate for easy and early access to mammograms:

“The UK breast screening programme has been operating since 1988, and has screened more than 19 million women so far, and detected around 117,000 cancers, which is fantastic progress, but we still need to encourage more women to have a mammogram regularly, and in some cases earlier and at more frequent intervals. Private healthcare clinics can play a vital role to play in encouraging better take up of screening facilities for early cancer detection as they can deliver results quickly and get treatment started within a matter of days.”

Consultant breast surgeon Isabella Karat, in the Nuffield Guildford breast team makes a strong case for being alert,

“Women with a family history of breast cancer know they have to be extra vigilant, but every woman – and man for that matter – needs to be aware of changes to their body because early detection counts. The team here work across the spectrum of patients – from those that are simply concerned and want reassurance, to those with a potential genetic disposition who need more investigation. We provide comprehensive advice including access to expert genetic advice and testing, and we know the best forms of imaging which may include mammography, ultrasound or MRI. Knowledge is everything in this area, and being able to speak to both expert medical professionals and also nurses who are experienced in helping breast cancer patients manage their condition is critical.”

What happens when you visit our Breast Clinic?

The breast team will tailor your investigations and their frequency in discussion with you after a full breast healthcheck, including history and clinical examination by our Consultant Breast team. We usually don’t recommend a mammogram more than yearly unless you have a new breast problem. We will discuss the results with you and results will be sent to you and your GP informing you both of the outcome of your breast screening mammogram. If the results are normal, that is the end of the process.

If further investigations are necessary this does not necessarily mean that you have cancer - roughly 1 in 20 women are re-called after a screening mammogram and the majority of these are often discharged after further examinations. A few women with a new cancer diagnosis will have the advantage of the earliest possible diagnosis and go on for treatment privately if they wish here at the Breast unit in Guildford, but your GP will discuss what you need to do next and the options available.
