What to expect from breast screening

The images produced will then be examined independently by two Consultant Radiologists and results will be available promptly.
For most patients, only one appointment will be required, however if the Consultant Radiologist recommends that you would benefit from further investigation, you will be invited to return for further screening, such as ultrasound and biopsy at no extra cost.
Benefits of breast screening
Breast screening can identify small changes in breast tissue that may be too small for you, or your doctor, to feel. Detecting cancer at this very early stage means that it will be most responsive to treatment so there’s a better chance of success and increased survival.
Because the cancer detected through screening is likely to be smaller it may also be possible to remove the lump (by a lumpectomy) and conserve the breast instead of removing the whole breast (a mastectomy).
