About

Dr Amarasena graduated from Sri Lanka where he did his primary degree joining the medical college and followed on to do his postgraduate qualifications training as general specialist physician. Dr Amarasena then moved to the UK as a scholar to pursue his overseas postgraduate training. He obtained his membership at the RCP London and is currently appointed as a fellow. He won the British Traveling Fellow award in 2012 and attended the centre of excellence for vasculitis. He later was selected to a very competitive cohort to study osteobiology in rheumatic diseases which he undertook by reading for a Master's in Muscular Skeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. Dr Amarasena trained in rheumatology in the northwest deanery having undertaken research in Leeds. Dr Amarasena currently works as a consultant rheumatologist at the Robert Jones Agnes Hunt NHS Foundation Trust where he leads the rheumatology team. His research and clinical interests are in inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. He has experience in managing acute medical patients and all aspects of rheumatology.

Research

He is involved in many research studies where he is the Principal investigator or Co-Investigator.

He supervises a PhD student who is undertaking research on biomarkers to identify response to biological therapies which would aid in developing precision and personalised selections of therapies to treat psoriatic arthritis. In addition, he is the educational supervisor of the postgraduate trainees in the West Midlands Deanery, middle grade doctors in rheumatology He also regularly teaches 4th and 5th-year medical students from Keele University in the clinics and won the Trialog award for teaching awarded by the Keele University. He conducts dedicated teaching clinics for the registrars and is apparently the only such clinic in the region. He is also involved in the national recruitment for rheumatology trainees.

Dr Amarasena also works on the advisory board of pharmaceutical companies and is part of the regional specialised commissioning group for the West Midlands for high-cost drugs, and also instrumental in developing regional guidelines.
