Dr Farrant qualified at Guys and St Thomas’s Medical School, London in 1999. After completing his membership to the Royal College of Physicians he began his dermatology training at the world famous St Johns’ Institute of Dermatology.
His specialist training included time at St Georges Hospital, Kings College Hospital, Brighton General Hospital and Worthing Hospital. He gained his certificate of specialist training in February 2008 and spent a year working as a locum consultant at Kings College Hospital, London. In January 2009 he took up a full time post for Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust working at the Princess Royal Hospital and Brighton General Hospital.
Dr Farrant also holds an honorary consultant post at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital where he works twice a month in the specialist hair clinic with Dr David Fenton. Hair and scalp disorders are his main area of interest.
As a general dermatologist he sees patients with all types of inflammatory skin conditions (eg eczema, acne, psoriasis etc) and skin cancers. He also carries out skin cancer operations and removal of moles, skin tags and seborrhoeic keratoses.
His main clinical research is focused on hair conditions. He is currently looking at the treatment of female pattern hair loss, with Dutasteride, an anti-androgen usually used in prostate problems. He is also carrying out research into scarring hair conditions, where a database of patients with different types of hair loss is being compiled so his team can monitor the disease and response to treatment.
