Sometimes, even regular exercise and strict dieting aren’t enough to get rid of excess fat. That is when you may want to consider liposuction.
The areas most often treated by liposuction are the tummy, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees and neck. The surgeon makes a small cut (incision) in the skin, and inserts a hollow tube called a cannula to break up fat cells beneath the surface. The fat is then sucked out through the cannula.
Different techniques can be used, and your consultant will assess your overall health, skin quality, and the amount of fat to be removed, before talking you through the best approach.
- Liposuction on a small area can be performed under local anaesthetic - otherwise, you’ll require a general anaesthetic
- Depending on the extent of the surgery, you may be able to have the procedure as a day case
- You can expect to take one to two weeks off work
- You may need to wear an elastic support garment for two to six weeks after surgery
