Gastric Bypass is a weight loss surgery procedure that uses both restrictive and malabsorptive elements. The result is you cannot eat as much as and you absorb fewer calories.

Advantages of Gastric Bypass Surgery

    • Slightly higher total average weight loss reported than with adjustable gastric band

Disadvantages of Gastric Bypass Surgery

    • Complex procedure requiring cutting and stapling of stomach and bowel
    • More operative complications than with adjustable gastric band
    • Medical complications due to nutritional deficiencies are expected, meaning dietary supplements are required for the remainder of the patient’s life
    • ‘Dumping syndrome’ can occur – resulting in nausea, sickness and diarrhoea
    • Non adjustable
