GPs Welcome Start of Regular Mobile MRI Service to Cambridge Hospital

One of the world’s most advanced mobile MRI units has started a twice-weekly service at the Nuffield Health Cambridge Hospital in Trumpington Road, to the delight of local GPs.

The mobile unit, equipped with a state-of-the-art scanner which can be used to diagnose disease in both adults and children, will be calling at the hospital every Monday and Thursday.

It is one of a fleet of mobile MRIs developed by Nuffield Health Diagnostics to allow the charity to deliver healthcare wherever it is needed in the country.

“This is the very first time that this hospital has had an MRI service so it is a very exciting development”, said Mary McKee, a manager with Nuffield Health Diagnostics.

“I have been talking to several local GPs about the service today and the response from them has been fantastic.”

MRI is a painless diagnostic procedure that produces clear images of tissue and organs inside the body. It is often used to image the brain and the tiny nerves that make up the spinal cord. It can also be used to examine the heart and the large blood vessels, the joints, spine and organs such as the liver, kidneys and spleen.

The service has started just a month after the installation of a 64-slice CT scanner and is the latest development in a two-year, £18 million programme of investment at the hospital.

Earlier this year, the Hospital re-opened the doors of its newly refurbished and upgraded oncology unit. The unit provide’s state-of-the-art medical treatment and care for around 20 cancer patients a day in modern, clean and comfortable surroundings.
