Experience
Mr Isbister qualified from Glasgow University in 1982 with initial Orthopaedic Training in Glasgow and subsequently in Birmingham. In 1991 he was Senior Registrar to Derek McMinn who had implanted the first Metal on Metal Resurfacing Arthroplasty less than a year earlier as a potential answer to the younger more active patient with arthritis of the hip. He was able to follow its development and, on taking up post as Consultant in 1994, introduce the procedure to Wolverhampton as part of only 3 centres worldwide carrying out the procedure at that time. The implant was redesigned in 1997 and continues to be used with success.
In 1994 Mr Isbister set up the first specialised Hip and Knee Replacement service in the City using a variety of implants (Exeter Hip, cementless fixation, ceramic on ceramic bearings) to address patients' specific needs including complex Primary and Revision operations. In 1997 he set up the Wolverhampton Bone Bank based at New Cross Hospital to supply allograft bone which is an essential part of these more demanding procedures. Since 2004 patients undergoing Hip Replacement at The Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital have also had the opportunity to donate their bone. He has a 10 year experience of Unicondylar Knee Replacement (a more conservative form of Knee Replacement - Medial, Lateral and Patello-Femoral) with 7 years using a Minimally Invasive approach.
