Experience
My training background was based in the West of Scotland but involved prolonged stays in both London and New York City to acquire specific clinical and technical training. As a junior surgeon I followed an academic track and was a clinical Lecturer on Surgery in the academic surgical unit at the Western Infirmary for several years. Having been appointed a Consultant Surgeon in Glasgow in 1989, I now provide a full clinical programme in surgical gastroenterology and emergency surgery. My referral practice has focused on the management of gastrointestinal malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease and severe obesity. This latter activity has developed markedly since 2004. I have provided a substantial component of the available surgical service in Scotland for bariatric (morbit obesity) surgery, and was the first to offer laparoscopic surgery for these patients in Scotland.
I participate in multidisciplinary team working, in both clinical radiology and colorectal cancer management.
