Board of Governors
Nuffield Health is managed by the Board of Governors, who are both Directors of the Company and the Trustees of the Charity. The Board is responsible for setting strategy, ensuring that there are the necessary financial, human and physical assets to meet those strategic aims, monitoring the performance of the Group, overseeing risk management, and setting the Group’s values.
The Governors delegate day-to-day executive authority to the Group Chief Executive.

Mr Michael Smith JP
Michael Smith joined the Board of Governors on 1 October 2003 and became Chairman on 1 December 2009. He is currently Chairman of the ‘Barts and The London’ Charity, a non-executive Director of NHS West Essex and Senior Adviser to Candesic Ltd.
He was previously Chairman of Abbey Hospitals, Bettercare Group, Castlecare Group, Newham University Hospital, Redbridge Healthcare and Mimosa Healthcare Holdings and was Managing Director of BUPA.
Mr John Evans FRICS
Mr Evans is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors, having been a Member of Nuffield Health since 1983 and a Governor since 1988. Mr Evans is Chairman of the Audit Committee and a member of the Executive Remuneration and Nominations Committees. He is a Consultant to and was previously Senior Partner in the firm of Beresford Adams Commercial (Chartered Surveyors). He is also a member of the Council of the University of Chester and is Chairman of its Finance & General Purposes Committee. Mr Evans lives in Cheshire and has a long association with the Nuffield Health Grosvenor Hospital in Chester.
Jane Wesson
Ms Wesson joined the Board on 1 April 2005 and is a member of the Board Integrated Governance Committee. A former solicitor with Eversheds, she is Director and Trustee of the Anchor Trust (a large charity with housing and social care objects) and an Independent Assessor for Public Appointments. Previous positions include Chair of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence and Chair of National Clinical Assessment Authority. She has been a non-executive director of Pontefract Health Authority and Wakefield Health Authority and was a founding Trustee of the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Trust.
Russell Hardy
Russell becomes a Governor of Nuffield Health in January 2010. After starting his career as a business economist for Unilever and then moving into strategy and planning consultancy at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, Russell moved into retail management in order to put the theory into practice. Initially he joined Kingfisher, where he held a number of roles including Deputy Finance Director for Comet and was involved in its M+A team before joining the Board of Safeway as Fresh Food Director. At Safeway he played a key part in the turnaround of the business, which led to an invitation to run Dollond and Aitchison opticians, ultimately taking that business through to a sale. Following that he joined Blacks Leisure Group as CEO leading that business for three years. Russell is currently Chairman of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital; Hunters Moor Neuro Rehabilitation Limited and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust. He is also a Trustee of the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum.

Neil McCausland
Neil becomes a Governor of Nuffield Health in January 2010. His early executive career was with Marks & Spencer Plc in various management and senior management positions, which led to him taking over the helm at C&A UK leading its turnaround from a failing retail company to a successful property business. He then went on to reverse the fortunes of the NAAFI organisation for the MoD. More recently Neil has held a number of non-executive positions and currently holds the chairs for TJ Hughes (a discount retailer), Kurt Geiger (a luxury footwear retailer) and Skin Clinics (skin treatment centres).
Guy McCracken LVO
Guy became a Governor of Nuffield Health in January 2010. Following a degree in Food Technology from Reading University the majority of Guy’s career has been in food retailing. He was a plc Board Director and Joint Managing Director of Marks & Spencer plc after which he was Chairman of Duchy Originals Ltd. Most recently Guy was Chief Executive of Food Retail of The Co-operative Group where he led the transformation of the business culminating in the acquisition of Somerfield. He is currently a member of the DEFRA Council of Food Policy Advisors. Previously Guy has held non-executive directorships with TSB plc and Glisten plc and Board positions with not-for-profit organisations including the University of Westminster, Bradfield College and CORDA, the heart charity
Fiona Driscoll
Fiona became a Governor of Nuffield Health in January 2010. She began her career in management consultancy focusing on economics, marketing and communications with a number of different agencies before becoming a highly successful Managing Director for The Rowland Company, a Saatchi & Saatchi subsidiary and then CEO at Ogilvy, Adams and Rinehart, again leading the organisation through a major turnaround. Fiona then worked in private consultancy before joining the Defence Evaluation Research Agency working on the development of the business model prior to privatisation. She was then appointed Strategy Director for Hedra Plc, a public sector consultancy. More recently Fiona has held a number of non-executive directorships for organisations including the Horse Race Totaliser Board (The Tote) Altala Group Ltd and Thomson Intermedia Plc. She also works in an advisory capacity for a number of Government initiatives.
