How Nuffield Health Works

Nuffield Health is managed by the Board of Governors, who are both Directors of the Company and the Trustees of the Charity. The Board is responsible for setting strategy, ensuring that there are the necessary financial, human and physical assets to meet those strategic aims, monitoring the performance of the Group, overseeing risk management, and setting the Group’s values.

The Governors delegate day-to-day executive authority to the Group Chief Executive.

michael smith

Mr Michael Smith JP

Mr Smith became the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Nuffield Health on 1 December 2009. He joined the Board on 1 October 2003 and is a member of the Board Integrated Governance Committee. Mr Smith is currently Chairman of Newham University Hospital NHS Trust, Mimosa Healthcare Holdings Limited and Castlecare Group Limited. He was a Director of Bupa Hospitals Limited and Bupa Insurance, and established Bupa’s Health Screening business. His has previously been Chairman of Abbey Hospitals and was Chair of Redbridge Healthcare NHS Trust during the opening of the new King George Hospital at Goodmayes. He is also a non-executive Director of the English Community Care Association.

john evans

Mr John Evans FRICS

Mr Evans is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Governors, having been a Member of Nuffield Health since 1983 and a Governor since 1988. Mr Evans is Chairman of the Audit Committee and a member of the Executive Remuneration and Nominations Committees. He is a Consultant to and was previously Senior Partner in the firm of Beresford Adams Commercial (Chartered Surveyors). He is also a member of the Council of the University of Chester and is Chairman of its Finance & General Purposes Committee. Mr Evans lives in Cheshire and has a long association with the Nuffield Health Grosvenor Hospital in Chester.

lord glenarthur

The Rt Hon the Lord Glenarthur DL (Simon)

The Lord Glenarthur became a Governor of Nuffield Hospitals in 2000, is Chairman of the Board Integrated Governance Committee and a member of the Executive Remuneration Committee. An elected hereditary peer, Lord Glenarthur is active in the House of Lords where his particular interests include health, defence, aviation, home affairs and Scotland. He has held various ministerial posts including Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Health and Social Security from 1983 until 1985 and Minister of State for Scotland from 1986 to 1987. Lord Glenarthur is currently a Commissioner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, Chairman of its Audit Committee and a member of the Clinical Governance Committee. He also holds trusteeships of various voluntary bodies, including the Hanson Research Trust and the Philip Allison Foundation. He was Chairman of St Mary’s Hospital Paddington NHS Trust from 1991 to 1998.

 

christopher tetley

Mr Christopher Tetley

Mr Tetley served as a Governor from June 1993 until February 1997 and rejoined the Board in 2001 when business commitments permitted. He is a member of the Audit and Board Integrated Governance Committees. Following a career in the Army he now farms in Yorkshire and is Managing Director and Clerk of the Course at Thirsk and Wetherby Racecourses. A former Chairman of the Purey Cust Trust, Mr Tetley maintains close ties with our hospitals in Yorkshire.

lars evander

Mr Lars Evander

Mr Evander became a Governor of Nuffield Health in 2001. He is a member of the Audit and Executive Remuneration Committees. He has spent the greater part of his career in banking and finance, in both Sweden and London - where he is now based. He trained as a lawyer and joined Svenska Handelsbanken in 1973 and worked in various roles with the bank until 1995. Mr Evander served as a member of the Board of Ealing, Hammersmith and Fulham Mental Health NHS Trust until 2001.

 

jane wesson

Jane Wesson

Ms Wesson joined the Board on 1 April 2005 and is a member of the Board Integrated Governance Committee. A former solicitor with Eversheds, she is Director and Trustee of the Anchor Trust (a large charity with housing and social care objects) and an Independent Assessor for Public Appointments. Previous positions include Chair of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence and Chair of National Clinical Assessment Authority. She has been a non-executive director of Pontefract Health Authority and Wakefield Health Authority and was a founding Trustee of the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Trust.

 

New Governors

russell hardy

Russell Hardy

Russell becomes a Governor of Nuffield Health in January 2010. After starting his career as a business economist for Unilever and then moving into strategy and planning consultancy at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, Russell moved into retail management in order to put the theory into practice. Initially he joined Kingfisher, where he held a number of roles including Deputy Finance Director for Comet and was involved in its M+A team before joining the Board of Safeway as Fresh Food Director. At Safeway he played a key part in the turnaround of the business, which led to an invitation to run Dollond and Aitchison opticians, ultimately taking that business through to a sale. Following that he joined Blacks Leisure Group as CEO leading that business for three years. Russell is currently Chairman of the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic and District Hospital; Hunters Moor Neuro Rehabilitation Limited and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust. He is also a Trustee of the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum.

neil mccausland

Neil McCausland

Neil becomes a Governor of Nuffield Health in January 2010. His early executive career was with Marks & Spencer Plc in various management and senior management positions, which led to him taking over the helm at C&A UK leading its turnaround from a failing retail company to a successful property business. He then went on to reverse the fortunes of the NAAFI organisation for the MoD. More recently Neil has held a number of non-executive positions and currently holds the chairs for TJ Hughes (a discount retailer), Kurt Geiger (a luxury footwear retailer) and Skin Clinics (skin treatment centres).
